The Department centres are located in the Ground Floor of the Main Hospital Block with ancillary centre in the different blocks. The Department is service for the last 43years starting as a x-ray department. The department was initially headed by surgeons and physicians who were trained in the art of radiology, or were self taught. The services improved over the years to reach the present levels. The department is lead by a team of consultants who work 24x7 for providing services to the hospital patients in the wards and OPD.
The radiology is equipped with a number of manual and digital radiography machines. Apart from this there is an image intensifier unit for contrast and fluoroscopic procedures. The workload is on an average is 275 tests per day. The department has Plain Xray 60mA, 100mA, 300mA, 500mA & Digital Xray Unit. The unit caters to the routine needs of the departments of Orthopedics & Trauma, Accident and Emergency units, All Surgical and Medical specialties. The department provides contrast studies for urological (IVP, ACUG), genital (hysterogram, HSG), spinal (Myelogram), gastrointestinal systems (Barium Swallow, Enema Studies). The films are numbered and archived. With the installation of the digital unit the use of films has reduced and the consultants are entertained to the reporting room for discussion and verification. The department also handles medical jurisprudence services in age estimation. The general radiology reporting is done in a reporting room with space for teaching and training of postgraduate, interns and graduates posted and they involve in diagnostic and interventional studies.
The ultrasound facility of the department is one of the earliest ultrasound units in the city. There are facilities for trans-abdominal sonogram, antenatal sonogram, ovulation monitoring, paediatric and neonatal sonogram. The workload of CT scan on an average is 95-100scans per day. The unit supports invasive procedures like biopsy of liver, kidneys, mediastinal, retro-peritoneal , breast and muscul-oskeletal lesions.
of the abdomen, carotid and peripheral vessels, for pregnancy and kidney are performed routinely. The patients with varicose veins are assessed for valve incompetencies and presurgical assessment is provided. The department also has a separate cardiac Doppler unit which is handled by the cardiologists and patients with ischaemic cardiac abnormalities are assessed regularly.
Computerized axial Tomography (CT scan)
The Department has CT scanner installed in 1996 and still functional and caters currently to emergency and routine services of all departments like head injuries, trauma and guided procedures. The workload of CT scan on an average is 55-60 scans per day. CT guided biopsies of lung, liver mediastinal and vertebral lesions are the CT guided interventions done regularly.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI scan)
The department is equipped with a 1.5Tesla unit with MRA and MRS facility.10– 12 MRI examinations are carried out every day. The majority of the work comprises of brain and spine scans. The MRI scans are run through the TNMSC as a paid service. Patients need to register. Emergency patients are accorded priority on recommendation of the treating consultants.
