John P Merrill, born in 1917, attended the Harvard Medical School, andgraduated in 1942. He was in the Air Force serving as the flight surgeon to thecrew of the Enola Gay, the aircraft that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.He developed the artificial kidney dialysis machine, modified from the originaldesign of Dr. Wilhelm Kolff. The artificial kidney developed by Merrill -Brigham-Kolff dialyzer was highly successful in the treatment of ARF and CRF.

The Department of Nephrology was started in 1987, has now grown to become acenter for specialty treatment in Advanced Renal Diseases. We plan to upscalewith establishment of an centre for Renal Transplantation, Centre forcomprehensive insurance Scheme of the government, and an advanced Traininginstitute in Nephrology.

Department of Nephrology of thishospital caters to the needy renal patients of the southernmost districtsnamely Tirunelveli,Tuticorin and Kanyakumari. Presently the department has aperitoneal dialysis unit and hemodialysis unit.

Outpatient clinics are conducted on Mondays and Wednesdays. Patients are givendrugs including the life saving medicines like Cyclosporine which is given postrenal transplant free of cost in the special OPD for this purpose. Bothhemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis services are provided free of cost.

Post graduate residents in General Medicine & Pediatrics are posted for amonth training in Nephrology & Dialysis. The department has a ParamedicalCourse on Dialysis Technology since 2005-2006. Thirty eight students in threebatches have already passed out of this department. The 4th batch of 12students are undergoing training at present.

The department trains medical professionals and nursing professionals from GovtThoothukudi Medical College Hospital, Thoothukudi & Govt KanyakumariMedical College Hospital, Asaripallam in dialysis techniques. Our departmenthas shown a phenomenal growth from 2003 to 2009 in terms of number of patients treated and the number of dialysis done. Around 132 patients with End StageRenal Failure who are given peritoneal dialysis in 2010-11 need Renal transplantation. At-least 25% of these patients have an appropriate relative renal donor.
